ice baths

Cold water therapy, also known as ice bath submersion, helps repair damage associated with intense physical training. When you immerse yourself in ice cold water, your blood vessels constrict, and when you get out, they dilate. This process helps flush away metabolic waste post-workout.

Cold water immersion (CWI) can also trigger a floodgate of mood-enhancing chemicals in the brain by awaking our natural ‘fight-or-flight’ response. This response to environmental stress works by conditioning our brains to cope better with the stressors of everyday life. It also decreases the production of inflammatory cytokines which are linked to anxiety and depression. After the initial temperature shock, our bodies are able to calm down and become more resilient to changes in our environment.

Your session FAQs

  • You will need to bring your swimmers and a towel.

  • If you have not done cold water therapy before, it is recommended having cold showers at home for a few days before your session so you can start to get used to the initial shock feeling you get when immersing yourself in cold water.

  • Swimmers.

  • Your body will need to learn to adapt to the cold. Cold water immersion is a science that begins and ends with the breath. At first, your cardiovascular system may react to the ice-cold water by causing you to breathe erratically. As you slowly increase your tolerance to the cold, you will be able to exercise control over your breath’s rhythm and increase the benefits of cold water immersion.

  • Due to the drastic change in core body temp it is recommended a clearance from your OB is given before use.
